An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Risk & Insurance team for a dynamic and committed individual to support the council as Principal Claims Specialist.
The Risk & Insurance team are responsible for all aspects of the Council’s insurance portfolio, which includes the claims handling service, whether that is in-house or via our legal partners.
About the role:
You will be joining a team of motivated and welcoming risk and insurance professionals dedicated to providing an efficient service.
You will provide a comprehensive claims investigation and risk management service to the council. The post will align across the whole service.
Key responsibilities will include:
· Be the main lead in the Risk & Insurance Team for liability claims up to an agreed value.
· Investigating claims, gathering detailed evidence, and liaising with stakeholders such as claimants, insurers, solicitors, witnesses, other council departments.
· Assess liability and make recommendations for settlements within defined policies and procedures.
· To lead on counter fraud strategies for insurance fraud, addressing potential fraudulent claims to protect council funds.
· Ensure compliance with statutory and relevant protocols and internal procedures.
· Identify risk issues within service areas and provide support and guidance on risk management opportunities or improvements.
· To proactively identify risk management initiatives to prevent or reduce risk that affect the operational functions of the council.
· Provide support and advice to witnesses and training to colleagues across the council.

What skills and experience do you need to have:
· A thorough knowledge of insurance principles and claims investigation is desirable.
· Experience of handling insurance claims
· Strong communication skills.
· Ability to work collaboratively within the team.
· Manage and organise own workloads and diary.
· Attention to detail and accuracy.
· Experience of working with database systems and Microsoft packages.
· Identify and implement improvements.
· Coaching and mentoring others and ability to delivery training.

Our Risk & Insurance team is contractually based in Matlock, Derbyshire, but as part of our Modern Ways of Working programme we are currently working on a hybrid basis. There will be an opportunity to discuss future working arrangements at interview. This is a full-time temporary position, but we recognise that this does not work for everyone, so flexible working requests will be considered against the needs of the service.
